What exactly is a dental crown?

Dental crowns can be made from Zirconia, but most people find the ceramic and resin composites to be more than sufficient. Dental Crowns are also called “caps”, since they’re customized to sit atop of problematic teeth, but it’s not always due to a traumatic accident. For example, you may need a root canal due to a major cavity, but the tooth is healthy enough to stay in the mouth. Your dentist will remove the infected part of the tooth, clean it out, and then place a crown on top to prevent any further decay or damage.

What can I expect?

Your first visit will consist of an examination of the area, and a mold of your teeth will be made.

If only part of the tooth is broken, a lab technician will create a temporary putty crown that mimics the pointy parts of your teeth.
Should the entire tooth need to be covered, a temporary cap will be used to cover the entire tooth.

Soon you’ll be ready to return for your second visit. It is here when the permanent cap will be fitted and carefully analyzed for proper placement and then cemented in. Once smoothed down, you’re ready for a polish.

How does the dental bridge process differ from crowns? A dental bridge will use your healthy teeth to anchor the synthetic teeth. Any tips on how to care for my new crown and/or bridge? Diligent brushing and flossing is to be continued, though your dentist can provide a more detailed hygiene practice for your individual needs.
